En el corazón del Centro Histórico, sobre los cimientos de la ciudad antigua, se levanta Casa Seminario. Fue construida en 1640 y es hoy la casa más antigua de la Ciudad de México que sigue siendo un hogar. Pertenece a la familia de la mujer que la salvó, y cada celebración que acoge ayuda directamente a mantenerla en pie.
En 1988, la restauradora Mónica Baptista López Negrete la adquirió, decidida a rescatarla. Para entonces ya había devuelto la vida a lienzos de los más grandes artistas de México y restaurado obras monumentales en la Catedral Metropolitana. Cientos de piezas habían pasado por sus manos. De todas ellas, Casa Seminario fue la que eligió para quedarse.
In the heart of the Centro Histórico, on the foundations of the ancient city, stands Casa Seminario. Built in 1640, it is the oldest house in Mexico City that is still a family home. It belongs to the family of the woman who saved it, and every celebration it hosts goes directly toward keeping it standing.
In 1988, the restorer Mónica Baptista López Negrete bought the house, determined to rescue it. By then she had brought canvases by Mexico's greatest artists back to life and restored monumental works in the Metropolitan Cathedral. Hundreds of works had passed through her hands. Of them all, Casa Seminario was the one she chose to keep.

¿Why is it called Seminario?
The street takes its name from the Seminario Conciliar, the seminary where the Archdiocese of Mexico trained its priests. It was founded at the end of the seventeenth century, under the Council of Trent's mandate that every diocese educate its own clergy (hence "Conciliar"), and it stood beside the Cathedral. In the eighteenth century the house itself became part of it: for more than twenty years it housed the Colegio Chico de Santo Tomás, the seminary's school for its younger students.
How much of the original building still stands?
Almost all of it. When the restoration began in 1988, the seventeenth-century layout and building systems were still intact beneath later alterations. Those additions were removed without touching the original structure.
